Alex Buckner, PsyD

I pursued my undergraduate education at Tulane University in New Orleans, shortly after Hurricane Katrina struck. This experience in New Orleans was invaluable in helping me see the suffering in many parts of the U.S and all over the world. This suffering, along with my desire to help people find their way out of suffering, inspired me to become a psychologist. Following my undergraduate studies, I worked for two years at Four Winds Hospital and NewYork Presbyterian Hospital in Westchester County, NY.
After gaining experience in the field, I completed my doctoral studies at Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, where I received my doctorate degree in clinical psychology. During my time at Yeshiva, I gained extensive experience in individual, couples, and family therapy, as well as psychological testing and assessment. I have worked with individuals at NYU’s counseling center, multiple community mental health clinics, and inpatient state and private hospitals.
For the past five years, I have been exclusively in private practice, and I specialize in treating clients with Borderline Personality Disorder, Young Adults transitioning from one stage of life to another, such as leaving home for college or finishing school and entering Adult life fully. I have been trained intensively in Psychoanalytic Therapy, and I am most closely aligned with the Object Relations school of thought. I also recognized the importance of teaching clients skills and focusing on the here-and-now, and not exclusively focusing on the past. As a result, I have pursued extensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy as well.
While I know that I my technical knowledge and level of experience is extremely important for my clients to get better, I believe what is most important to me, and which is absolutely true, is that l am extremely passionate about my work and devoted to others. I seek to empower people to discover who they truly are, be brave enough to try out new behaviors and skills, and through this openness and learning, to leave therapy feeling healed. I pride myself on my empathy and therapeutic skills, and would look forward to helping you improve your life in every way I can.
